HC Deb 24 January 1984 vol 52 c556W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will ensure that when drugs are prescribed they are accompanied by essential instructions literature and that such is in the English language, irrespective of their country of manufacture.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The Medicines (Labelling) Regulations 1976, as amended, require the comprehensive labelling of all medicinal products licensed for sale or supply in the United Kingdom, with essential particulars including directions for use. Medicinal products which are dispensed following a prescription have directions for use at the request of the prescriber. All particulars given must be in English, though they may in addition be in one or more other languages. These requirements apply irrespective of the country of manufacture.
