asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many persons are known to be suffering from ill health through glue-sniffing or other forms of solvent abuse; and what are the ages of such persons.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is able to make an estimate of the number of young persons who are addicted to glue-sniffing or other forms of solvent abuse; and whether he will institute an inquiry.

Mr. John Patten

No information is available on the number of young people who misuse solvents regularly. There is no clear evidence to suggest that the practice is physically addictive, although it may induce psychological dependence. The Department's offer to fund suitable studies of prevalence of solvent misuse, within the funds available, remains open.
