asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many pupils gained O-level or A-level Russian in 1970, 1975, 1980 and 1983; and how many teachers of Russian there are in schools in England.

The number of passes gained by candidates at GCE summer examinations in Russian are given in the following table below. The number of teachers who were teaching Russian in maintained secondary schools in England and Wales were estimated to have been about 300 in 1977. Information is not avaialble about the numbers of teachers in other years or of teachers in England only.
