Mr. Nicholas Brown

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the total sum of money spent through the inner city partnership programme to date in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne; and how much has been spent on projects specifically in the constituency of Newcastle upon Tyne, East.

These are the geographical divisions used by the city council. "East" includes that part of the Newcastle upon Tyne, East constituency within the partnership area but excluding Sandyford ward. "City and General" includes schemes for the benefit of the partnership area as a whole.

In addition, Tyne and Wear county council undertakes partnership projects, but details of that expenditure broken down by the areas requested are not readily available.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the total population living within the city of Newcastle upon Tyne inner city partnership area; and what portion of that total population resides within the constituency of Newcastle upon Tyne, East.

On the basis of 1981 census information, the total population living within the city of Newcastle upon Tyne inner city partnership area is 115,400. Of that population 48,400, or 42 per cent. reside within the constituency of Newcastle upon Tyne, East.
