Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the approximate number of day release students taking building courses at technical colleges under day release schemes; and what proportion of these came from council direct labour building departments and from private contracting firms, respectively, during the years 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983.

Information about students released by local government direct labour building departments to attend further education establishments are not separately identified in the Department's statistics. The number of block and day release students undertaking building courses in England is available only for the years 1979 to 1982 and the details are as follows:
