HC Deb 06 February 1984 vol 53 c432W
Mr. Baldry

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how much money in real terms was spent on state secondary schools in Oxfordshire in 1970, 1974, 1979 and 1983;

(2) how much money in real terms was spent on average on each child attending state secondary schools in Oxfordshire in 1970, 1974, 1979 and 1983.

Mr. Dunn

The figures for the financial years for which consistent information is available are as follows:

Net institutional recurrent expenditure by Oxfordshire LEA on maintained secondary schools (at 1982–83 outturn prices)
1978–79 1982–83
Expenditure (£000) 39,984 40,700
Cost per pupil (£) 866 929

These figures concern net institutional recurrent expenditure and they exclude certain other items of expenditure, including the financial costs of capital expenditure, pupil support, and meals and milk.

Mr. Baldry

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the secondary school population in Oxfordshire in 1970, 1974, 1979 and 1983; and what is the anticipated secondary school population for 1985 and 1990.

Mr. Dunn

The numbers of pupils in maintained secondary schools, including middle deemed secondary schools, in Oxfordshire in 1974, 1979 and 1983 were 39,633, 46,155 and 43,577 respectively. Comparable figures for 1970 are not available. Projections of the school population for 1985 and 1990 are not available centrally.
