HC Deb 18 December 1984 vol 70 c130W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will estimate the reduction in accidents which would arise from the installation of lighting on the unlit non-built up roads with a 50 mph speed limit.

Mrs. Chalker

The only research in this area relating specifically to roads with a 50 mph speed limit gave an inconclusive result. A copy of the research report, TRRL Report LR 586, is in the Library.

Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will estimate the likely reduction in accident costs should lighting be installed on the unlit sections of non-built-up roads with (a) 60 mph speed limits and (b) 70 mph speed limits.

Mrs. Chalker

Research results show the reduction in injury accidents to be extremely variable. Further studies are in hand to try to improve the information. There are no estimates of likely reductions in the costs of accidents were lighting to be provided on all these roads.
