§ Mrs. ChalkerIn 1983 the total costs of accidents in darkness on unlit non-built up roads with a speed limit of 60 mph is estimated at about £200 million. The equivalent figure for such roads with a 70 mph speed limit is £44 million.
These figures comprise resource costs and an allowance for pain, grief and suffering.

Of these roads 1.5 per cent. had a speed limit of 50 mph, 49.5 per cent. had a speed limit of 60 mph and 49 per cent. had a speed limit of 70 mph.
