asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the amount of subsidy paid per annum to provide school meals in England; and what proportion is paid to subsidise the cost of midday meals to boarding pupils.

The net recurrent cost of the school meals service in 1982–83, the latest year for which firm figures are available, was £411 million (cash). Information on the subsidy of midday meals to boarding pupils is not available.
