asked the Secretary of State for Transport how railway investment approved by Her Majesty's Government since 1979 north of Manchester compares with that elsewhere in England.

Of the 16 major railway investment projects approved by Government since 1979, six relate wholly or partly to the area north of Manchester. In addition, BR itself has authorised other investment projects in that area which did not require our approval.
