HC Deb 06 December 1984 vol 69 c230W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the number of self-employed people in Wales in 1981–82 and in 1983–84; and of these, how many in each case were self-employed in the construction industry.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Based on the biennial labour force survey estimates, the numbers of self-employed in 1981, 1982 and 1983 were 115,000, 118,000 and 121,000. No occupational breakdown is available on that basis. The latest information on self-employed construction workers relates to 1981 and is based on the census of population for that year which showed a figure of 16,290.
