HC Deb 06 December 1984 vol 69 c230W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is his estimate of the numbers of unemployed (a) skilled construction workers and (b) unskilled construction workers in Wales in 1979–80 and 1983–84 and at the latest available date.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Information is not available for the period after 1981. Figures for that and the preceding two years were as follows:

Unemployed workers whose last employment was in the construction industry
Skilled Unskilled
October 1979 1,392 697
October 1980 3,347 1,154
October 1981 5,289 2,116

Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many jobs were created in 1983–84 under the part-time job release scheme in Wales; how much cash employers in Wales received in 1983–84 in Wales; and how many jobs were created in Wales in 1983–84 under the job-splitting scheme.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

The part-time job release scheme was introduced in October 1983 and there was no take-up between that date and the end of the 1983–84 financial year. Fifty jobs were created in the same period under the job-splitting scheme.
