HC Deb 01 August 1984 vol 65 c363W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what research his Department has undertaken or financed on reducing the incidence of miscarriage following amniocentisis.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

For research of this type we look to the Medical Research Council, which receives its main support as a grant-in-aid from the Science Vote under the Department of Education and Science. The Health Departments made the council aware of their concern about the potential hazards of amniocentisis. As a result, a MRC working party carried out an assessment of these hazards which was published in theBritish Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1978.
