HC Deb 04 April 1984 vol 57 c554W
32. Mr. Neil Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, in the light of the data published in part 8 of the "Digest of Environmental Protection and Water Statistics No. 6 1983", concerning blood level concentrations in the United Kingdom in relation to European Economic Community reference levels and the occurrence of high lead concentrations in drinking water, he will reconsider his policy of phasing out lead in petrol.

Mr. Waldegrave

No. Typical blood-lead levels in the United Kingdom appear to be lower than those in many other EC countries, but we cannot ignore the potential health hazard and intend to do everything we can to reduce to a minimum exposure to lead from all sources —including lead from petrol.
