HC Deb 04 May 1983 vol 42 c87W
25. Mr. Tom Clarke

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what are the total number of jobs lost in each of the coal, steel and manufacturing industries in Scotland since May 1979.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The closest period to that requested for which consistent estimates are available for all three industries is June 1978 to September 1981. According to the census of employment the estimated numbers of persons employed in coal mining, the iron and steel industry and manufacturing industries fell respectively by 4,000, 11,000 and 119,000.
