HC Deb 04 May 1983 vol 42 c87W
24. Mr. David Marshall

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the level of unemployment in Scotland.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

On 10 March 1983 the number of unemployed claimants in Scotland was 341,500, a fall of 5,900 from the February figure. The seasonally adjusted figures show a slight increase in unemployment over that month, but by less than the average for recent quarters.

29. Mr. David Lambie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he will take to reduce the current level of unemployment in Scotland.

Mr. Younger

We shall hold firmly to our present economic strategy, which offers the best hope of a lasting reduction in unemployment, while maintaining an extensive programme of special employment and training measures to help those unable to get a job.
