HC Deb 10 March 1983 vol 38 cc499-500W
20. Mr. Christopher Price

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what will be the extra cost of paying university salaries to the non-university academic employees of the new university institution in the Province; and on how many sites he expects it to operate.

Mr. Scott

It is not possible to say exactly what, if any, additional salary costs will be involved. The amount will depend on the salary scales in operation at the date of the merger. However, an estimate prepared for the steering group on the basis of current salary scales suggested that some £270,000 might be involved if all the present academic staff of the Ulster polytechnic were to transfer to the university scales.

I expect the new institution to operate on four main campuses.
