HC Deb 09 March 1983 vol 38 cc438-9W
Mr. David Watkins

asked the Secretary of State of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) what functions were organised by the British embassy in Ankara during the recent visit of his noble Friend the Minister of State;

(2) what functions were organised by the British embassy in Ankara to mark the 400th anniversary of Anglo-Turkish diplomatic relations during the recent visit of his noble Friend the Minister of State; and what criteria were used in selecting guests.

Mr. Hurd

The main functions organised to mark the 400th anniversary of Anglo-Turkish diplomatic relations were a lecture, an academic seminar and a gala dinner. Only the dinner was organised exclusively by the embassy at Ankara. The guest list included Turkish Ministers, members of the Diplomatic Corps and others most closely involved with the other two functions and with Anglo-Turkish relations. The lecture and the seminar were organised jointly by the embassy and by the Turkish Historical Society and by Hacettepe University, respectively. They invited people who they thought would be interested in the subject.
