HL Deb 27 July 1983 vol 443 c1613WA
Lord Irving of Dartford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When they anticipate the 1972 proposal for a Council Directive on safety glass for use in motor vehicles to be adopted and whether they will make a statement about the reasons for the delay in adopting this proposal.

Lord Lucas of Chilworth

This proposal was shelved many years ago because some member states, including the United Kingdom, found the Commission's proposals unacceptable. The Commission have not shown any sign that they intend bringing forward their proposals again either in the original or in an amended form. In the Government's view the case for the Commission's original proposals is now much weakened by the greater use of seat belts, and the consequent reduction in windscreen injuries.
