asked the Minister for Trade if he has concluded his current review of United Kingdom merchant shipping; and if he will make a statement.

I have recently concluded a series of meetings with the General Council of British Shipping and the maritime unions, and I am considering carefully the many proposals they have made.

27. Mr. Woolmer

asked the Minister for Trade if he has any plans to introduce new measures to assist United Kingdom flag merchant shipping; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Sproat

I am considering what more can sensibly be done to assist the shipping industry through a difficult period. I shall take fully into account the detailed representations and proposals made to me by the General Council of British Shipping and the maritime unions.
