asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, further to the reply to the hon. Member for Caernarvon (Mr. Wigley) on 28 January, Official Report, c. 542, what consideration Her Majesty's Government have given to the illegal occupation of East Timor and the potential use of arms to suppress the local population when deciding on arms exports to Indonesia.

When considering the sale of arms to Indonesia, the situation in East Timor is one of the factors we take into account. We would not authorise tie export of arms if we thought they were likely to be used for purposes of repression.
