HC Deb 03 February 1983 vol 36 c172W
Mr. Race

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, pursuant to the reply to the hon. Member for West Renfrewshire, West (Mr. Buchan) on 25 January, Official Report, c. 387, what response Her Majesty's Government have received to their representations to the South African Government concerning the death sentences passed on six members of the African National Congress.

Mr. Onslow

As the reply to the hon. Member for Renfrewshire, West (Mr. Buchan) stated we, like other Governments, have brought to the attention of the South African authorities the public concern in these cases and our hope that the death sentences will be commuted. It is now for the State President of South Africa to consider the men's clemency petitions, taking into account the international concern that has been expressed.
