HC Deb 20 December 1983 vol 51 cc108-9W
46. Sir William van Straubenzee

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what savings to public funds he calculates will flow from his recently announced decisions on the methods of calculating parental contributions for student maintenance grants.

Mr. Brooke

The level of expenditure on student awards in 1984–85 will be reduced by approximately £21 million compared to what it would otherwise have been as a result of the changes to the parental contribution scale and the minimum award announced by my right hon. Friend on 17 November 1983. The net effect of all the changes announced by my right hon. Friend, however, will be to increase previously planned levels of provision for student awards by £12 million.
