HL Deb 26 April 1983 vol 441 c916WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What study they have made of non-nuclear defence and whether they have considered the proposals of the Alternative Defence Commission and of Just Defence, and whether they will make a statement.

Lord Glenarthur

The Government will be looking with interest at these two recent documents. We are committed to strengthening our conventional defence forces but we believe that a nuclear element will remain an essential component of NATO's defence forces for the foreseeable future, in order to deter aggression and prevent war.
