§ Mr. Beithasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what evidence he has regarding the extent to which local authorities have made use of the additional £49.5 million expenditure allowable for rate support grant purposes to maintain further education services.

This expenditure is not separately identifiable in the accounts of individual local authorities. There are, however, clear indications that authorities are responding to the increased demand for full-time education from 16–19 year olds.
