HC Deb 06 July 1982 vol 27 cc87-8W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what evaluation he has made of mine detection equipment capable of detecting plastic mines.

Mr. Pattie

Although the Armed Forces are equipped with a wide range of equipment for detecting and clearing mines, the minefields laid by the Argentines in the Falklands are proving to be particularly troublesome. This is due in part to some mines containing very little metal, the nature of the terrain and the uncontrolled way in which they have been laid. Many ideas for dealing with these problems have been, or are being tested, and we will follow up any idea which seems likely to provide a solution. In this context I must express my gratitude to the many members of the public who have put forward ideas. They may be assured that all are being considered.
