HC Deb 18 January 1982 vol 16 cc14-5W
Mr. Tilley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he accepts Lord Scarman's recommendation that police recruit training should be extended to a minimum of six months.

Mr. Mayhew

We hope that initial courses at police recruit training centres can be extended and that it will also be possible to improve the training given to recruits in individual forces during the remainder of their two-year probationary period. The training arrangements for probationers need to be examined in detail as a whole. We shall therefore ask the Police Training Council, which advises us on police training matters and next meets on 28 January, to review all aspects of police probationer training, with particular reference to Lord Scarman's recommendations, and to let us know what improvements they think should be made.
