HC Deb 18 January 1982 vol 16 cc34-5W
Mr. Frank Allaun

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will investigate the circumstances in which, during an Army exercise involving troops from Carver barracks, Debden, soldiers pointed guns at a mother and two young children and at other Radwinter villagers; if he will take steps to ensure that no event of this kind takes place again; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Wiggin

This incident occurred during an exercise involving some 20 soldiers in a route march and two static tests in the village of Radwinter. During this exercise the soldiers were carrying weapons, but not ammunition. At no time were weapons deliberately pointed at civilians.

I very much regret this incident and I understand that the unit has already apologised to the villagers for alarm caused. Instructions have been given that should avoid a recurrence.
