HC Deb 09 February 1982 vol 17 c310W
Mr. Body

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he has received any representations about importation of cockles from the Netherlands; and whether he is satisfied that the way they are harvested and processed is in accordance with the health regulations of the United Kingdom.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

We have received a number of representations about the difficulties faced by our cockle fishermen. I have on two occasions met delegations of cockle fishermen to discuss their problems, including the effect on their markets of imports from Holland. Questions relating to our own health regulations are for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services, who is fully aware of the questions which have been raised about the way cockles are processed in the Netherlands.
