HC Deb 09 February 1982 vol 17 c323W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what was the percentage increase in the overall cost to the Exchequer of Civil Service salaries as a result of the Civil Service pay settlement for 1980–81;

(2) what was the percentage increase in the average salary of a civil servant as a result of the Civil Service pay settlement for 1980–81.

Mr. Hayhoe

The April 1980 non-industrial Civil Service settlement resulted in average increases of 18.75 per cent., but a 2.3 per cent. reduction in manpower, together with deferment of the increase until 7 May 1980 for most grades, kept the overall increase in cost within the 14 per cent. cash limit.
