HC Deb 09 February 1982 vol 17 c323W
Mr. Russell Johnston

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total cost of tax relief on mortgage interest payments allowed to owner-occupiers in Scotland; and how many persons in Scotland receive such relief.

Mr. Ridley

Estimates for Scotland are as follows:

Total mortgage interest relief at 1981–82 Numbers receiving
income levels mortgage interest
relief
£ million
110 270,000

The estimate of relief takes into account the rise in mortgage interest rates in November 1981 and assumes that no further changes will occur before the end of the financial year.
