HC Deb 06 December 1982 vol 33 cc348-9W
36. Mr. Duffy

asked the Minister for Trade which Sheffield steel firms were warned by Her Majesty's Government about the reintroduction of the Berry amendment into the 1982 United States Defense Appropriations Act which was intended to prohibit procurement by the United States of material containing "special steel" produced outside the United States of America.

Mr. Peter Rees

Her Majesty's Government have been in contact with two Sheffield steel firms, Hadfields Ltd. and the British Steel Corporation, on this matter. It now seems likely that the prohibition referred to by the hon. Member will be waived for fiscal year 1983 in respect of weapons and weapon systems purchased from abroad by the United States Government.
