§ Dr. Edmund Marshall asked the Secretary of State for Transport what will happen when the sequence of letters at the end of motor vehicle registration numbers which indicate year of registration reaches the end of the alphabet.
§ Mr. Kenneth Clarke:A new registration format will be required in 1983. Last year my Department issued a consultation paper setting out the issues that would need to be taken into account and inviting suggestions from the public. A copy of the consultation paper is in the Library. We hope to complete consideration of the many responses received and to announce our decisions later this year.
