HC Deb 22 October 1981 vol 10 cc178-9W

Mr. Myles asked the Secretary of State for Scotland which multinational companies have established new manufacturing units in Scotland over the past five years; and whether his Department has any information on the extent to which these new factories have been established with the purpose of exporting a large proportion of their products to the other European Community member States.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher:

The following list comprises overseas-owned companies known to my Department as having established or taken over manufacturing units in Scotland in the last five years: it includes facilities for the manufacture of new products but not straightforward expansion of existing production capacity.

Detailed information on the marketing intentions of the parent company at the time of establishment is not available to my Department, but it is evident from the export performance and statements by management of many of these companies that they look to a European market.
