Mr. Ernie Ross asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people died of hypothermia in Scotland in the latest year for which figures are available; and how many were male over 65 years and female over 60 years.

Mr. Allan Stewart:

In Scotland 40 deaths were attributed to hypothermia as the underlying cause of death in 1980. Of these, 17 males were aged over 65 years and 17 females were aged over 60 years.
