HC Deb 22 October 1981 vol 10 cc170-1W

Mr. Alfred Morris asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether the "Micros in Schools" scheme covers the supply of microcomputers to special schools.

Mr. Kenneth Baker:

The "Micros in Schools" scheme run by the Department of Industry offers 50 per cent. funding towards the purchase of one of two microcomputer packages to secondary schools in the State and independent sectors that do not presently possess a microcomputer. Special schools in the secondary sector are included in the scheme.

Mr. Alfred Morris asked the Secretary of State for Industry what progress is being made in issuing microcomputers to special schools; and, bearing in mind the opportunities presented by computing for jobs suitable for people with a wide range of physical and intellectual abilities, what plans he has to speed up the provisions of microcomputers in special schools so that handicapped youngsters will be as well prepared to take advantage of these opportunities as their non-disabled peers in ordinary schools.

Mr. Kenneth Baker:

The Department of Industry "Micros in Schools" scheme is open to secondary schools, State and independent, which do not currently have a microcomputer. Applications from special schools in the secondary sector are being received and are processed promptly by the Department.

In addition to the eligibility of secondary special schools under the present phase of the micros scheme, my right hon. Friend intends to offer additional help to special schools in obtaining peripheral and interfacing devices that will help handicapped youngsters to take advantage of the opportunities offered by interaction with microelectronics. We shall, of course, keep the House informed as this plan develops.
