HC Deb 22 October 1981 vol 10 c184W

Mrs. Renée Short asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps are being taken to ensure the reopening of the new wing at the Great Ormond Street hospital for sick children; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Vaughan:

As indicated in my reply to the hon. Member for Newham, North West (Mr. Lewis) on 18 June 1981—[Vol. 6, c. 427.]—an independent firm of structural engineers has, for the past 13 months, been investigating structural faults in the new cardiac unit that have prevented its occupation and use.

A final report has not yet been received but the board is continuing to pursue the matter vigorously with a view to implementing remedial work and the occupation of the building as soon as possible.

I shall make a statement when the full facts are known.
