HC Deb 22 October 1981 vol 10 c184W

Mrs. Renée Short asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will ensure that doctors who have Home Office permission to use cannabis for the treatment of patients or research are freely able to do so; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Vaughan:

Doctors who are licensed by the Home Office to possess cannabis are free to use the drug for the purpose of treatment of individual patients in the light of their clinical judgment, or to carry out clinical research. In the latter case the provisions of the Medicines Act in respect of the normal requirements for clinical trial certificates or exemption would apply.
