§ 25. Mr. Bob Dunnasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will seek to amend the law relating to corporal punishment in schools so as to ensure that the decision whether or not to use it rests in each case with the head teacher rather than the local authority.
§ Mr. Mark CarlisleResponsibility for school discipline, including the use of corporal punishment, is shared among head teachers, governing bodies and Local education authorities. I have no plans to change the law in this respect, but in my view matters of discipline including the use of corporal punishment are generally best left to the discretion of the individual head teacher.
