asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many scholarships have been awarded under the national engineering scholarship scheme in the years 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981.

The number of national engineering scholarships awarded since the scheme was introduced in 1978 has been as follows:

1980	263

The results of the 1981 competition will not be known until November.
