HC Deb 10 June 1981 vol 6 c150W
Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the percentage reduction of grant to universities for 1981–82, 1982–83 and 1983–84; what are the likely effects of such reductions to course provision and staffing; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Boyson

The recurrent grant to universities for home and other subsidised students for the financial year 1981–82 has been reduced by 3½per cent. in real terms compared with 1980–81. The Government's expenditure plans provide for a reduction in expenditure on home and other subsidised students in higher education by 1983–84 of rather more than 8 per cent. below the level indicated in Cmnd. 7841. The detailed implications of the plans for universities are under discussion with the University Grants Committee.
