HC Deb 01 July 1981 vol 7 c423W
Mr. Cartwright

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is his estimate of the number of redundancies in the United Kingdom which would result from a decision to purchase a new heavyweight torpedo from the United States of America.

Mr. Pattie

Such a decision has not yet been taken. The industrial implications of the various options, such as effects on United Kingdom employment, will be fully taken into account in the decision process. Until a final decision is taken the effects of any particular choice remain hypothetical.

Mr. Cartwright

asked the Secretary of State for Defence when he now expects to make a decision about the source of the proposed new heavyweight torpedo.

Mr. Pattie

A decision is expected later this year.
