HC Deb 01 July 1981 vol 7 c423W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he is satisfied that the Army and Royal Navy need to continue to run their own separate universities producing only some 80 graduates a year; and what are the costs of the establishments.

Mr. Goodhart

The Royal Naval Engineering College, Manadon and the Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham not only provide for university level graduates; they also support a wide range of shorter scientific and engineering courses to meet the needs of the Royal Navy and the Army, in addition to the engineering degree courses to which the hon. Member refers. Though the number of United Kingdom Service first degrees from Manadon and Shrivenham in 1980 was 95, the intention is to increase this figure as far as present circumstances allow. The cost in 1979–80 of RNEC Manadon and RMCS Shrivenham were £7.1 million and £7.4 million respectively.
