HC Deb 12 January 1981 vol 996 cc449-50W
Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what economies his Department has sought to make in the provision of, and in the specifications for, road direction signs within the last two years.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

We are proposing to introduce new traffic sign regulations very soon. The regulations will dispense with the need to light some signs in lit areas. They will increase the number and range of signs which can be erected by local authorities without the need to seek authorisation from the Department. I intend to reduce further the work of review and modification of signs and the authorisation of specific local signs.
