asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the average cost, in terms of benefits paid, of a workless person in the United Kingdom using the most recently available figures.

Mrs. Chalker

Average payment of unemployment benefit and supplementary benefit to the unemployed was £30.13 per week during the first quarter of 1981.

Mr. Cormack

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total cost of benefits paid to the unemployed during 1980–81; and to what extent this varied from the expectations contained in the March 1980 Public Expenditure White Paper.

About £2,460 million on unemployment benefit and supplementary benefit to the unemployed in Great Britain; an increase of £345 million on the sum included in the White Paper.
