HC Deb 27 October 1980 vol 991 c164W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the number of jobs lost in manufacturing industry in the latest available month.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 8 August 1980, c. 406]: Precise information about job gains and losses is not available, but an indication of the net change can be seen by comparing the levels of estimates in employment at different dates.

Between April and May 1980, the latest date for which information is available, the number of employees in employment in manufacturing industry in Great Britain fell by 44,300. The figure is provisional.
