HC Deb 27 October 1980 vol 991 c164W
Mr. Ray Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will consider the establishment of a Government skillcentre at Bridgend to help alleviate the problem of retraining redundant steelworkers and others.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 8 August 1980, c. 407]: No. I am advised by the Manpower Services Commission that existing skillcentre provision within daily travelling distance of Bridgend is considered sufficient, taking account both of demands for retraining by unemployed workers, and the present and prospective skill needs of local industry. Workers made redundant by the British Steel Corporation will benefit from the special employment and training measures referred to in the statement on the industry made by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Industry on 19 June.—[Vol. 986, c. 1784–85].
