Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish in the Official Report the source of manufacturing job decreases for each of the eight counties of Wales between 1974 and the latest figures available under the following categories (a) closures or outward movement of firms and (b) contraction of existing establishments.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Information is not available in the form requested. Details of the net change in employment levels are available from the annual census of employment, but these are not yet available at county level beyond 1976. For Wales as a whole the Department of Employment estimates that employment in the manufacturing sector stood at 305,600 in December 1979 compared with 335,500 in June 1974.
