HC Deb 03 March 1980 vol 980 cc55-6W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what form the encouragement being given by his Department to an increased use of probation orders is taking.

Mr. Brittan

The desirability of the greater use of probation orders is the subject of discussions with and among the representative organisations of the probation and after-care service and the Magistrates' Association and more generally in the many contacts between the Department and the service at all levels. This encouragement is supported by the provision which has been made for increases in the resources available to the service both of manpower and of facilities for use in conjunction with probation orders such as day centres and hostels.
