Mr. Allan Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many foreign manufacturing firms set up in Northern Ireland in 1977, 1978 and 1979; and how many people currently they employ.

Mr. Giles Shaw

No such firms committed themselves in 1977 to setting up factories in Northern Ireland; four in 1978; seven in 1979. Employment in these firms totals some 1,200 at present and should rise to around 5,400 at full production.

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what was the expenditure on attracting foreign manufacturing investment incurred by the Northern Ireland Department of Commerce in 1977, 1978 and 1979.
